PIERO FRUGONI was born on August 2, 1909 in Florence, Italy.
He attended the Medical School of the University of Padua from 1927 to 1931, and
received his M.D. degree from the University of Rome in 1932.
He was voluntary assistant at the Medical Clinic of the University of Rome
(1932-1933) and at the Surgical Clinic of the University of Milan (1933-1935).
From January 1936 to March 1940, he was a Fellow in Neurosurgery at the Mayo
Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota, and obtained his M.S. degree in 1939. In April
of 1940, he returned to Italy and served in the Medical Corps of the Italian
Royal Navy from 1940-1944.
From 1945 to 1953, he was staff assistant in General Surgery at the University
of Rome and was made responsible for the treatment of the neurosurgical patients
of the Institute. In March of 1954, he was appointed Chief of the Neurosurgical
Service of the City Hospital of Padua. In 1960, Dr. Frugoni became the first
Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Padua and Director of the
Institute of Neurosurgery of the same University. In 1965, he was appointed
Director of the Post-graduate School of Neurosurgery.
In 1979, he retired as Professor of Neurosurgery and from every professional
activity. In 1983, he returned to Rome to live.
Dr. Frugoni was President of the Second European Congress of Neurological
Surgery in Rome in 1963. He received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the
University of Minnesota in 1964, and the Medaglia d'Oro dei Benemeriti della
Scuola, della Scienza e dell'Arte from the University of Padua in 1978.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (President, 1961-1963) and
other Italian Societies and Academics; honorary member of the Société de Neuro
Chirurgie de Langue Francaise and of the Society of Neurological Surgeons;
corresponding member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the
British Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für
Neurochirurgie, and the Sociedad Luso-Española de Neurochirurgia.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Sciences
and of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery and of the
Seara Medica Neurocirurgia.
He is author or co-author of over 150 articles and chapters in textbooks.
Several of his papers reflect his interest in cerebrovascular anomalies,
intracranial and spinal cord tumors, benign intracranial hypertension,
hemispherectomy for epilepsy, and surgery of the sympathetic nervous system.
Dr. Frugoni and Ornella Cagli were married December 21, 1944. They have two sons
and a daughter: Cesare, Paolo, and Livia.

Il Prof Frugoni è scomparso nel 1994 . Prima di lasciare Padova ha destinato l'intera raccolta di reprints dei lavori scientifici collezionati in decenni e ora conservata presso la Biblioteca della neurochirurgia di Treviso. Migliaia di diapositive di riprese intraoperatorie testimoniano l'intelligente e meticolosa accuratezza del Maestro. La nostra e la precedente sono generazioni troppo mediocri per comprendere fino in fondo una figura di tale rilievo, fra le poche che a livello internazionale abbiano illustrato la Neurochirurgia italiana nel secolo passato.
